The Costurero de la Reina or Queen's Sewing Box, is a beautiful yet small building shaped like a castle with little round turrets, topped with minute battlements, which is located next to one of the María Luisa Park entrances.
This is a unique space decorated with bricks forming horizontal strips in two colours which are true identity signs of Seville: albero yellow and red ochre. It was built in the 19th Century by Antonio de Orleans, Duke of Montpensier, and the architect of this singular building was Juan Talavera de la Vega.
The Queen's Sewing Box may be considered the first Neomudéjar building in Seville, displaying this Arabic style in its large windows.
According to one of the most famous legends about the Sewing Box, Queen María de las Mercedes, given her frail health, would spend long periods in the rooms of this small castle sitting in the sun sewing with her ladies-in-waiting, during which time the King Alfonso XII would ride up on his horse from the Alcázar of Seville to visit her after tending to State affairs. However, this would have been impossible since the building was erected in 1893 and the Queen died in 1878.
