The Castle of Saint George, a medieval fort next to the Triana Bridge and seat of the Holy Inquisition Court in Seville for nearly three centuries, is now a centre for the interpretation of the remains and religious repression of the Spanish Inquisition. Seville gives room for this.
The origin of the Castle of Saint George is unknown, although it is assumed the Visigoths were its first occupants to defend the city Spalis from invasions and wars. After various dwellers and owners, including the Count-Duke of Olivares, it was torn down in the 19th Century to create an extension from Plaza del Altozano to Calle Castilla.
At present, as well as being next door to the renovated Food Market of Triana, it houses the Interpretation Centre, where several information panels have been installed to help visitors learn about the history of this curious spot.
The space looks out onto the river, through the Paseo de la O, a peaceful promenade from which to contemplate the Triana Bridge in awe. The promenade can be accessed from the venue itself or from the Paseo de la Inquisicin (which connects the Calle Castilla with the river bank).
