Well, it is a way to praise the grace of a person, but also his wit and talent. In Seville, art plays a fundamental role in life, being the cradle of universal masters of painting.

Life is baroque

Behind this phrase is a whole philosophy of life. Art has always developed in Seville almost naturally, as a consequence of the vital experience that the city brings.

Of all the artistic periods in Seville, the Baroque stands out, perhaps because of its special fusion with our way of seeing life. And two Sevillian painters stand out in this special way of looking at reality: Velázquez and Murillo.

Universal geniuses of painting

Itinerary of Velázquez

Diego de Velázquez is one of the most important painters in the history of art. He was born in a house located between San Pedro and the Alfalfa, in an almost hidden street, and whose facade takes us faithfully to the painter’s time. The apparent humility of the house will make you think of that child, that young man, who in the early years of the seventeenth century is becoming a genius.

To see his main works in Seville, go to the Velázquez Center at the Focus Abengoa Foundation, where Santa Rufina stands out. Seville pays tribute to its most universal painter with a statue in the Plaza del Duque.

Murillo Itinerary

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo is another great of Sevillian Baroque painting. The Museum of Fine Arts (the second largest art gallery in Spain) has a huge collection of his works. The beautiful museum square is presided over by his statue. Also in the Hospital de La Caridad you can admire the quality of Murillo, contemplating the paintings that adorn its walls.
