Maestranza Theater

Work of the architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín, is located in one of the most privileged places of the city next to the Torre del Oro and the Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza, on the banks of the river Guadalquivir, being considered one of the best avant-garde theaters in Spain. The construction of the theater began on February 10, 1987.

Considered one of the best avant-garde theaters in Spain.

It was inaugurated by H. M. Queen Sofia of Spain on May 2, 1991, and a few days later, on the 10th, the first show was performed, consisting of a lyric recital in which the first Spanish figures of the opera world of the late twentieth century performed: Jaime Aragall, Teresa Berganza, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Alfredo Kraus, Pedro Lavirgen, Pilar Lorengar and Juan Pons. The main hall has a cylindrical shape with a capacity for 1,800 spectators, with a dome of 47.20 meters and a stage opening of 18.9 by 9.5 meters. It is distributed in stalls, two terraces, a balcony and paradise.

Thanks to its variable acoustics, different shows can be performed, from operas to classical music concerts and recitals, flamenco, ballet and zarzuelas. In addition to the main hall, the complex contains experimental theater halls, exhibitions, conferences and a cultural research center. Of particular note is the Manuel García hall, where chamber and small-format operas are performed. Also, the Teatro de la Maestranza is home to the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville, which not only participates regularly in opera performances, but throughout the season develops here an intense season of concerts.
